It's 1961, and London is starting to swing. These early days of the cultural and sexual revolutions will eventually come to define the era, but the OB/GYN doctors and nurses of the fictional New London Hospital are already participants. Led by doctor Otto Powell (suavely played by Jack Davenport), who performs advanced surgical procedures as well as clandestine pregnancy terminations, the ensemble cast takes on the issues of the day: abortion, birth control, hormone therapy, infidelity, rape, women's roles in society, and more. Added to a standard medical drama format is an ambiguous crime committed in the past that involves some of the main characters. VERDICT The six-episode ITV series, broadcast in the United States as a PBS Masterpiece Mystery offering, is more manner than substance. Viewers who enjoy contemporary period pieces will likely find the set and costume design more captivating than the plot or characters. A lightly entertaining story line with a highly stylized look.-Linda Frederiksen, Washington State Univ. Vancouver Lib. (c) Copyright 2015.
